The standard motorhome: convenience and a large network

A standard motorhome – this is also affectionately called “the white refrigerator camper” – rolls off the assembly line in large numbers. These motorhomes from the major motorhome brands from Germany and France are often ready for immediate delivery in the showroom as stock models – new or occassion. In other cases, they are special ordered, with delivery times that can take up to several months.

Benefits:

• Availability: stock models are often available immediately or fairly quickly.
• Service network: you have the security of a large international service network. This makes spare parts and repairs easy to arrange (even on the road).
• Investment: the resale value is fairly stable because the brand and quality are widely known in the market.

The drawbacks:

• Thirteen-in-a-dozen: you are stuck with standard layouts and have hardly any options to add your own flavor. The risk is that you’ll be looking at a “just-not-camper” for the next 20 years.
• Atmosphere: the use of standard materials often makes the interior feel little unique.

Camper completely self-conceived: freedom and risk

With full custom builds, you start with a blank sheet of paper. Your choices are thought out and built exactly as you envision them. This, of course, gives you a lot of freedom, but also brings responsibility.

Benefits:

• Complete freedom: you decide everything yourself based on your unique vision.
• Design: you choose your own building materials and create a design that doesn’t drive around anywhere else.
• The van: You decide which van will be the base of your house on wheels.

The drawbacks:

• Cost & time: the price is often higher than for a standard RV. This is because a lot of development and construction time is required for such a one-off design (one-off). Also the production time is often a lot longer.
• Technical risk: because you are reinventing the wheel, the build is often heavier and sometimes lower quality due to lack of optimization. The final quality depends entirely on the expertise of the builder.
• Resale value: it is generally lower. The quality is difficult for a subsequent buyer to assess and the layout is sometimes too specific for the rest of the market.
