Not every adventurous camper trip requires a 4×4. For 90% of travels in Europe, a 2WD with good all-terrain tires is more than enough. You can get surprisingly far with that – especially if you travel light and drive sensibly. An AWD system offers extra grip on, for example, wet grass or gravel, without you having to engage anything.
If you’re really heading into rugged terrain – think riverbeds, deep mud, or steep slopes with a trailer – then a 4WD with lockers and low range is a better choice. But don’t be misled by tough photos: for most adventures, a smart 2WD build is much more practical, lighter, and more fuel-efficient.
